Park closure hour changes made permanent in Kailua, Mō‘ili‘ili
Kailua Beach Park closed nightly from 12 midnight to 4 a.m., Kalo Place Mini Park closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Following community input formalized through their respective Neighborhood Boards, the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has made permanent changes to park closure hours at two City parks, one in Kailua the other in Mō‘ili‘ili.
At Kailua Beach Park, the park closure hours established last year as part of a pilot program will be made permanent. The beach park is now closed nightly from 12 midnight to 4 a.m.
At Kalo Place Mini Park in Mō‘ili‘ili strong community support, expressed through a Neighborhood Board Resolution, is resulting in the closure hours for this park changing. The park will now be closed nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., replacing the previous closure hours of 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
“The community looks forward to the new hours, which will allow nearby residents, particularly school-age children, to get the much-needed sleep they require,” said John Johnson, a member of the McCully-Mō‘ili‘ili Neighborhood Board who helped facilitate the hour change. “We greatly appreciate the efforts of all involved for listening to our concerns and helping us make this happen.”
Similar to any City park location, a closed park may be traversed at any time. Particularly to access the ocean or other natural or culturally significant areas. However, it is illegal to remain in a park during closure hours unless otherwise permitted by DPR. We appreciate the patience and understanding of the Kailua and Mō‘ili‘ili communities as these changes were considered.
